take shifting in intersections for example, if some gross person runs a red light and you see them comming just as you've pulled it out of first then you won't be able to accellerate until you shove it in gear. whereas if its already in gear you can just punch the throttle and possibly avoid a really bad accident. this situation doesn't really matter if you have 10 minutes of driving experience or 50 years, its all about driving properly.
