volkswagen is really gross, think of the most overenginered but least logical way something should be put together, once you have thought of it go out and check the car and odds are You will be right. But honestly I couldnt tell ya, In going to guess you do have to since on the MK3's you have to take off the bumper, grille and fender to remove a door.
