Winter Tires in Ontario?

Hey all,
Just looking for some advice on my first winter that I'll be driving in Ontario...
I never really was out much last winter since I didn't have my car with me then, so I don't know how the roads get...

Right now I have a set of Cooper All seasons on the car I think, pretty much brand new, but not anything special. I won't be driving much in the first half of winter, possibly during my coop term in winter I'll be driving a bit more. Would all seasons suffice driving around the city streets, or are winter tires a big help?

How icy does it get on the roads in the winter here, or do they just salt the crap out of them like I've been hearing?

Thanks for the help!
