GM Denies Being Approached by Toyota

Quote:
"GM denies it has been approached by Toyota"
GM said yesterday it has not been approached by
TOYOTA concerning a potential ALTERNATIVE ALLIANCE to
the one being discussed with Renault and Nissan.
Today's Globe (Dow Jones, B6) outlines a story
published by BusinessWeek on Saturday suggested Toyota
is forging a game plan to potentially counter a 90-day
exploratory effort at GM, Nissan and Renault related
to a potential alliance.
My thinking is this: there is an ounce of truth to every rumour.
Considering the aliances Toyota has had over the years with GM (Toyota/Chevy Cavalier, Rav 4/Sidekick, Corolla/Prism, etc), I would be willing to bet there have been talks. What Toyota would gain from this, im not sure though...

GM has ties with every car company out there, it's just not as well publicised as some other relationships.

GM and Honda have swapped parts/engines/trannys over the years.

Toyota has litte/nothing to gain from a share in GM. Which is why the rumors are just that, rumours. Toyota operates in such a different way, and an enviable away at that, that it would be pretty weird if they were to do a 180 and take a chunk of GM. They've made so many sound buisness decisions over the years I just can't see them doing it.

I believe the new saturn vue has the honda v6 from the accord?

although i do believe if toyota went about talks with gm in a certain way it would be a good way to infiltrate the gm lovers market.

It's not a 180 for Toyota. They've been working with GM for years. That's part of the reason why they built the NUMMI plant in California back in the 80's. GM wanted to learn Toyota's methods, and Toyota wanted a stronger foot hold in America which the joint plant gave them. GM and Toyota are a lot closer to each other than just re-badging cars.

What else is in it for Toyota? How about world domination. Toyota wants to be the largerst auto manufacturer in the world. Taking GM would put them there, and in a big way. Even if Toyota doesn't want GM long term, they may even buy it as an investment turn it around and make some serious $$ because Toyota knows how to turn things around and make money. It may take time, but even if they don't buy GM it's an excellent investment to build then sell off.

Nine times out of ten the majority of people who talk shit down here don't even have any of the crap they talk about on their car. I drive an 8 year old domestic and barely give two shits about it. I beat the hell out of it and it begs for more, just like your girlfriend. Go ahead, cut me off. I dare ya.

Yes, the 3.5L out of the MDX. Also, Honda traded their motors for GMs trannys to go with those motors+cash. Turned out to be one of the largest recalls in Honda history as the tannys either failed or had to have a new oil line installed.

^^ but you said Toyota has nothing to gain from GM, but it clearly did/does if they shared the Matrix/Vibe platform with Pontiac.

Sorry, I should re-word that. Toyota has nothing to gain by taking partial control of GM. Sharing technology, parts, etc. all car companies do that, it's crucial to keep costs down.
