NEED HELP! (from the VW guys)

(for any '02 jetta)

the headlight bulb apparently exploded inside of my headlight casing (passenger side), leaving broken glass inside.

now, being as i am not very handy when it comes to cars, do i REALLY HAVE TO remove the front bumper to take out the headlight casing? i figure if i take out the headlight, i should be able to rattle out the broken glass

any suggestions? i really dont want to take off that bumper if i dont need to...maybe i will just take it to the dealer (its under warrenty)

I know i'm interested in an answer. The guy who previously owned my car had those blue bulbs in and broke....if anyone knows an easy solution to do this and possibly get condensation out as well lol

volkswagen is really gross, think of the most overenginered but least logical way something should be put together, once you have thought of it go out and check the car and odds are You will be right. But honestly I couldnt tell ya, In going to guess you do have to since on the MK3's you have to take off the bumper, grille and fender to remove a door.

I'd say if it's under warranty then get it done right by the professionals.....for free!!!

Unless, you changed those bulbs at some point to be aftermarket then they will blame it on you for sure, so you may be screwed...

Sorry man

Louis? Have You ever actually worked on Your car before? If you work on something normal like a nissan, honda or GM for example, then work on a VW you get really upset by how much simpler they could have made things.

Pulling the bumper takes less than 5 minutes to do. Seriously. It's 4 screws in each wheel well. 2 bolts under the left and right air intakes and 5 bolts under the grill.

Then 4 small bolts and the headlight pops out in your hand.

I've worked on Hondas and, Toyotas extensively. They're no different to working on a VW. The VR6 is a pita in the small engine bay, but what do you expect? It's far better than many of the retarded transverse V6 domestic configurations. Removing engine mounts to change spark plugs is great fun...

Honda and Toyota piss me off when it comes to changing oil filters. Can never prefill the damn things because they usually screw directly onto the side of the block. VW is better in this regard.

You don't starve the engine of oil as opposed to when you don't fill the filter, you have to wait until the filter fills up and then the oil gets recirculated.

volkswagens are puzzles. hide a bit for the door under the fender and a bit for the fender under the bumper and a big for the bumper under the grille.

I just wanted a new door. for the love of pete.

out of curiosity what kind of bulb was it? I've blown up two of those cool blue ones, pretty agrivating.

you dont have 2 fill an oil filter before you put it on theres not difference it still sucks it in after the fact just you add oil after...
annddddd about the headlight if you have extra time pull the bumper and just get a vaccum like mentioned above. Or you can take it to the dealership if its under warranty it should be covered

you *should* fill up your oil filter before putting it... it just matters moreso on diesels because of how much they rely on the oil as compared to gas motors.

Can we have a thread that stays on topic for once? Why the heck are you guys blabbing about oil filters??

Back to the topic at hand. You should be able to take the light cover without removing the headlight assembly. I had a MKIV Jetta for over 3 years and I have replaced bulbs without removing the headlight. I'm not sure however if you'll be able to vacuum up the broken bulb with just he cover off.

In case you need to remove the bumper, it is quite easy as silverstoned already said. First time around might take you 20 minutes or so but once you get used to it, it takes 5 minutest top. Make sure you have torx bits and you're good to go. Siverstoned's screw locations are pretty accurate, I think he forgot to mention the screws that attach your under engine cover to the front of the bumper. I believe there are 5 or 6 screws there, I don't remember as I had an aftermarket bumper most of the time.

if there is glass inside then yes you do need to take everything off. unless that is you want to try a shop in the opening and suck it out.
