VW Keys - Cutting and Programming

I just got my new 2001 Jetta but it only came with one key. However, the dealer had an extra VW key laying around and gave it to me. It's not for my car but he said it would save on a new key because the remote part is like half the cost. So where is a good place to have the key part cut? I hear the dealer is really expensive and some locksmiths will do it... anyone have any experience with this? Also, does anyone know how to reprogram the remote?

Anyone with a VW have any idea how much this costs from a VW dealer?

Thanks everyone!

part of why the cost is so high is because VW keys are laser cut and have a chip inside of them...

If the dealer told you someone else can cut you a key for a 01, he should not be working there.
Simply you can't...you have to get VW to make you new keys, based on the VIN..that is the only way you can get new ones as far as i know.

He wasn't a VW dealer. Just a used car dealer. I guess I'll go talk to the VW dealer then. Thanks!

way back in 99...I paid like $185 plus tax at the stealership to get the key cut and programmed on my 2000 Dub....

so the price of the key at the dealship included the cut...I'm not sure how they will charge in your case

My keys are expensive as well, not laser cut but it is chipped. ONly available at the dealership. Funny thing is that people go around taking you VIN numbers and going to the dealership to get keys made. Seen it on the news, scary stuff.

I emailed the Guelph dealer and they told me it was $130 just to get the metal peice cut (and they are the only ones that can do it) plus 20 minutes labour charge to reprogram the remote.

Programming?

What about programming the remote? Does that have to be done at the dealer as well? I looked up how to do it yourself and got two answers. Anyone done it before? Which one of these seems correct?

Quote:
Question
I just purchased a 98 Jetta that has the remote keyless entry. The dealer from which I bought the car had only one remote, but a friend of mine at a VW dealer gave me another one he had lying around.

The problem is, I cannot find any instructions about how to program this new remote for my car. My friend at the dealership thought the instructions were in the user's guide, but they were not.

The remote itself is the one made by Clarion and is in the shape of a key.

Answer
Place one key in the ignition and switch it on, (engine not running). Take a second key and turn the door lock on the outside driver door handle to the unlock position and hold it until you hear three beeps. The release the key and press the lock button on each remote to be programmed. There will be a beep to confirm each remote. Once done, hold the lock in the unlock position again untill you hear three beeps. Remove the key from the ignition. Your remotes should now be set.

Does anyone have any instructions on reprogramming the keyless entrycontroller? For some reason the controller stopped working. I was told to take it a dealer to reprogram but that costs $. Is there anyone has instructions on how I can do it? Thanks..

driver8
You have to have two keys. One in the ignition and one for the door. Turn the ignition to the on ,not start, on position. Put the other key in the drivers door lock. Turn the key in the door to the right (lock position) and hold it for ten sec.s. Then immedialtly turn it to the left all the way, and hold it for ten secs. You should here a tone, or beep, like when the alarm arms. When you hear this press the unlock button on your remote. There should be another beep to let you know it has programmed. You may need to replace the batterys if this doesn't work. Though sometimes it's the remote itself that craps out. If you hear the confirmation tone. Take the key out of the ignition and see if the remote works now.
Hope this helps, good luck.
Thanks all!

The first procedure is for MKIII VW's only...I belive the second one works for the MKIV 99+.

for the MK4...that procedure outlined will only allow you to program the functionality of the new remote...

you'll need on the VAG machines (I think that's what they're called) hooked up to your car to program the ignition immobilizer portion...

if you don't program the ignition immobilizer to recognise the chip in the new key....you'll be able to start the car with the new key...but the car shuts off after like 5-10 secs and the ignition imobilizer light oh the dash will just flash

Hmm that sounds like its no good. I guess I'll just have to fork over the money to the dealer
