Police to Spend $200,000 on Blackberries

I just read in the saturday paper that the po po is getting new blackberries for $200,000 dollars a year. This will give the police the ability to check criminal database on foot and get info on the people right quick, and make them more "proactive" as a Supt. Dan Anderson said.

What a fucking waste. Don't the cops get all this info quick through the radio? I mean you radio in a request and it gets back to you in 30s. and isn't proactive just a buzz word dumb people use to sound smart? What a bunch of fucking crooks.

its not just the WRPS its also the waterloo regional fire department that is getting them aswell. im sure you think its useless but obviously the police and fire departments dont.

did you also read the part where it would make it capable to track the on foot officer via GPS with the blackberries.
i dont think this is a waste at all. they were even talking about getting rid of the in car units. this has been a deal they've been working on for a few years from my understanding

I did read this part, and cops already have tracking shit on them. I don't know if its tracking them 24/7, but i do know that a cop is wearing a button or switch or something that can sets off a silent alarm or something like that. It's for when cops are getting the crap kicked out of em they can hit this and every cop comes a running.

So yea, waste of money

I was jsut following what you have done all along.

As for the blaqckberries, tell me why you think that it would be good idea? Instead of putting programs in place to better our community they decide to give them all $500 blackberries so they can do the same thing that old fashion radio and dispatfcher and opnboard computers do. But yeah i have not contributed to here because i am a moron and dont know any better, You are the kind of all knowledge and you must be the king of the world. Learn by your words next time.

if the dollar amount wasn't mentioned, would any of you have cared?

anyone going to go to a city council meeting to voice their opinion or take any other action living in this country affords you? if not, you can shut the fuck up. ever since i came back to this country all i see is bitching. if this program prevents one spouse from getting that dreaded 3am wake-up then it's worth it. Plus it tosses money back into this community, into the hands of people that actually make an impact.

Thats exactly what I was going to ask.

I sold a Blackberry to a police officer a month or so back, before this, and he came back and thanked me as he enjoyed using it to get in contact with people a lot faster. You'd be suprised that when each arresting officer does their write up how many people they must contact in order to get to the TRUTH and if they cant get ahold of people, then they go by their hearsay.

I think its a good idea, technology can help, and create more jobs. Just think of the guys who have to maintain and repair these ....Ive got my resume ready! haha

no... but i am going to write a book on how to be perfect ill mail you a signed copy for christmas

anyways back to the topic

how about you tell me why you think its such a bad idea? is it because they are spending 200 000 of tax payers dollars to better the response services.. i'm sure if you knew where all of your tax money was spent you wouldn't be worried about waterloo regional getting blackberries

Waterloo region is just a " test " imagine replacing pagers with blackberries. such as in communities that only rely on volunteer firefighters/police workers. my boss is a volunteer fire fighter and i have no idea how many times he hasnt been able to hear his pager at work due to the volume now if it were a blackberry an exact address and summary could be sent right to him

foot patrol could look up criminal records on the spot and be tracked by GPS during on foot chases instead of 10 police cars chasing after them they could potentially be one step ahead they could have everything that an in car patrol officer has at their disposal.

how about it if it works out it could also be used so paramedics could access peoples medical history while in the field? you know little timmy that needs antibiotics but is allergic to 75% of the ones out there.. but hey this is just what i think and i'm an idiot

actually there is a button, at least on my radio that does this. but it does not have GPS on it. (i dont work for WRPS)

yes you can get the same info from disptach, but it takes a while, its faster if you have the means to search for yourself. as well as having all the numbers and such on a blackberry, or have a call dispatched to your backberry (although i dont see this as a possibility right off the bat).

i dunno, its a toss up to me. its another tool, but is it necessary? i dont know.

There is a reason why it is costing so much......

1. The devices themselves are not cheap...

2. They will probably be running a BlackBerry Enterprise Server which costs a few grand, plus 100 dollars per user attached to the server....

3. RIM will not provide technical support to anyone out there with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server unless they have a Technical Support Contract......which in itself cost litterally 10's of thousands/year for support.

This is why it is so expensive.....We are actually lucky they are only saying 200 grand....it will probably be a lot more depending on how many devices they have and what level of support they go with.

Woo, now when they pull over a modified car they can post about it on the internet.

I don't think there is a big need for them, or a need period. Especially the fire department, what do they need a blackberry for.

------------------
This is where you type a bunch of shit about how awesome your car is. FACT: It's been scientifically proven that the more shit you write in here the less cool your car is. Nine times out of ten the majority of people who talk shit down here don't even have any of the crap they talk about on their car. I drive an 8 year old domestic and barely give two shits about it. I beat the hell out of it and it begs for more, just like your girlfriend. Go ahead, cut me off. I dare ya.
