Those with Audi A4's (2000 model)

Just wondering if you guys could fill me in on the high's and low's of this car (i.e. maintenance fees).
I signed up to an Audi forum but am still awaiting for confirmation of my registration e-mail.

Audi 1.8T's are the way to go.

Get Quattro if you can.. if not no big deal, but then your looking at the 170hp one or less..

stay away from the 2.8L V6 because its slow, and will cost you a fortune in gas. The 1.8T is the same motor that's in my car.. great on gas (get about 550 to 650 depending on how you drive and it wil blow thep ants off a 2.8l any day)

depending what year, the following problems i've seen

- Coil pack failures (same idea as sparkplug wires, but they do these under warranty)

- Window Regulators Tend to fail

- If you get the 2.8L you have to do the timing chain, which takes a full day and is about 700 bux... (stay away from that!)

- I've had the instrument cluster go in my mom's Audi TT, i've heard the same thing happens to A4's...

Check out forums.vwvortex.com, or even my site forums.generationdub.com there are audi sections on the vortex one...

VW doesn't have any quality problems, in fact, haev you ever been in a VW or an audi? They are liekly the best finished cars for the money. Not much I can say about a dodge though..

......when stuff DOES break, it costs a small fortune because you have to buy the parts direct from VW.

The 1.8T is one of the best, if not THE best turbo engine made today.

A friend of mine has a VW and his repair bills are pretty much never below $400 because he has to get the parts from the dealership as much as he doesn't want to.

........I'm not saying anything about the fit and finish, it's just that stuff tends to break a lot on them.

It'd probably be a MUCH better decision to buy a new one than a used one so that a warranty is included and not much should break in the first 3 years of the car's life.

Here.........the problems get worse as the car ages (the article has been taken down from it's orginal source, but you get the picture from this thread):

http://www.dodgeintrepid.net/forums/...ght=volkswagen

I mean, you might find a good one, but the chances of finding a lemon are pretty high. I have nothing against A4's.

On a side note.....

There are tons of stretched facts here

1) BMW, Mercedis, Audi and VW owners are picky. When you pay 35,000 + for a car, you probably have a decent job, where you can take your car in for an oil change, and warranty shit all the time and your not stuck workign 8 to 5 every day.

2) We have a 2004 Chevy (Caddy) and it has been in for warranty 23 times. (no lie)

3) Kia owners are probably working at subway, and woudln't have time to bring a car to a shop anyway..

4) I think your an idiot.

I TOLD you where I get my information from..........a news source on the internet that surveyed 55,000 driver's.

I'm still wondering where YOU get your information from since you never told me.

........23 times for warranty on an '04? My Intrepid has had more than it's fair share of warranty work, but I don't think 23 times

.......btw, you think I'm an idiot, and I think you're ignorant to facts........and since you don't actually tell me where you get your information, I think you're an idiot too. I still want to know where you got your information from because I think it must've been a REALLY bad source.

Hey Mandy
My Dad has a 1.8T Quattro 2000 A4
Is the Fully Loaded (Leather, sport package, S4 Steering wheel, Xenon)
WE put a badgeless grill and refinshed the wheels (16's)

I like driving it because the suspension handles like a dream.
It need more power, but nothing a CHIP can't solve.

Let me know if you want to test drive it
I think my dad will let it go for $20-$22K
It has 95,000km

Well, I figure I should be able to ask where you got your info from. If I was to make something up (I TRY not to) and someone called me out on it, I'd let them know that I have no source and I just came up with it in my head.

I have NOTHING against Volkswagens........I like them, I think they make nice cars. I DO think VW thinks that they're a better company than they actually are though. There is article upon article all over the net saying how bad VW is for quality, ESPECIALLY over the long term.

VW doesn't have build quality problems... BUT, there have been a number of well known recalls on recent models that have tarnished the reliablility image of VW's

I have two friends with A4's, they are brothers. One is a 98 2.8L and the other is a 99 1.8T. The 2.8L is not slow. The 1.8t has a stage 1 APR chip. Both cars pull pretty much even with eachother but the power curves are different. My friend with the 2.8L has been having transmission problems. He had to have a gear replaced under warranty b/c the teeth were loose, and now it is grinding into 2nd. As far as i know the 1.8t hasnt been having many problems except for worn bushings on the front suspension (but thats b/c he drives it pretty hard)

the 1.8T:

the 2.8L (in front, 1.8T 4th back):

Harry's onto something there, when you buy what is considered a higher class car you won't put up with little things squeeks and rattles, and will do everything you can to make sure the car is mint the entire time you own it. If you buy a cheap car, you expect little things to go wrong, thats why more people complain about expensive cars.

Mandy, I'm not sure of your budget, but don't limit yourself to the A4 when you can get good, low km, 2000/2001 S4's for around $36 000 or less. The A4 is a nice car, with decent handling and power, but when compared to the S4 its just a lot less fun.

oh and Harry I know its directed at Avenger but this picture pisses me off, we've been through this already... You can't just lift up on the dash of any neon and have it come apart like that, you've gotta use enough force to unclip it first. I'm sure your Golf is the same way, and if its screwed in, I could take out the middle screws and take the same picture.
