A good read about gas ... octane/perf/power...

There's some good info in this for those who 'think' that higher octane creates power over lower octane. I was enlightened. cheers |

.........what does your owner's manual say?
What I found funny about mine is that the owner's manual says 87 recommended..........but in the brochure it says that the maximum of 244HP is achieved by using 89 octane. It also states that any octane above 89 will not increase and may actually decrease HP. ------------------ Rob 2006 Honda Civic DX coupe 1.8L 140HP/128ft/lbs - HID's 2002 Intrepid R/T 3.5L HO 244HP/250ft/lbs - Bone Stock 15.5 @ 90MPH |

In my experience I have found that on high compression engines the higher the octane the better performance and fuel economy. With both of my VW's (2.0L GTI, VR6) I found that low octane fuel would average about 150KMS less per tank and horrible performance compared to the higher octane 91-94.
When I attended Conestoga for my Small Engine Certification our instructer had mentioned that High Octane in a small engine (2-4 Stroke) would leave a terrible amount of carbon and definitely decrease performance and life of small engines; as most of these engines have no more than a 6:1 compression ratio so they require a lower octane fuel that has a more volatile ignition than a harder to ignite high octane fuel. |
