Fiberglass?

Hey everyone, i was just wondering if anyone has any good links regarding fiberglassing the interior of a car? I'm just starting to get into it, i haven't tried anything as of yet, so any links/tips would be greatly appreciated

I've made a few fiberglass and carbon fiber parts.. What exactly are you trying to do?

FYI; Bad time of the year to start making parts out of glass unless you have a heated workspace detached from your home.

heres something i wrote on a different forum
im not sure what ur ideals are for a box but buy some tinfoil and duct tape to put down wherever u need to make a mold so it wont stick to ur truck
tinfoil/duct tape getting layed down

layer of glass, i normally do 2 layers of glass while its in the car/truck then i pop them out and add more layers in the garage or whereever it is that ur working

i didnt do anything special with this box as i jsut wanted somehtign quick and ended up with this

and heres some pics with the MDF rings and dowels
first setup ur frame, i used 3?4" MDF and 1/4" dowels and hot glued them togehter

streched a old shirt over top and pulled it TIGHT and glued all the edges...some people use a staple gun

put a layer of just resin on the shirt or whatever u use, and make sure u put alot on so it soaks thru the entire thing

let it dry and then scuff up and add several layers of glass

for some reason i didnt take any pics with hte glass on, but once its nice and thick cut out ur hole and do a thin layer of bondo to smooth things out

forgot to mention theres no point in wasting resin/fibreglass in the sub opneing but make sure u put it on good where the shirt meets the MDF rings for ur speakers as u want to make sure it stick tothe wood good
i ahve more fibreglassing pics if u want some more

and check out this guys work on his Z24, he doesnt really go into much detail but just looking at teh pics helps alot

HeC covered pretty much everything on how to lay fiberglass but if you happen to be in the area I have no problem showing you hands on how to do it. It's a bit messy so don't be dressed to go clubbing.

also waht are u going to be fibreglassing? if its jsut to get ur dash/trim pieces smooth theres no need for FG, alot of different grits of sandpaper adn ALOT of time will get u the same effect

right now i'm trying to find a good work space to do the fiberglassing, as with this crappy weather the glass won't cure properly i have a couple places in mind around my house as well as my friend's houses, but i need to make sure it will be properly heated and ventilated. wish me luck! i'll post as soon as i get something done

good luck with the glass work. Ive made a few parts for my car including upper dash, sub box and rear deck and this winter im going to tackle a dvd sytem and PS2 install. Make sure you let it fully cure (whatever it is you do) because post cure can be a huge disappointment and cost you tonnes of time in re-work. If you have a nicely heated shop, over night is fine but if you have any doubts then let it cure fo a couple days even.

Apparently another good way to do consoles/dashes is to build a skeleton frame out of wood, then cover it in a couple layers of fabric. Then you put a couple coats of resin on it, bondo, sand, and paint. Ill try to find the link to this method..

Edit: Nm, Hector already explained it.... I really need to start reading through threads .

OMG!

I have officially registered for the March 2007 program!! I am also taking all the available electives - even phase X! (even though it says experience is needed, the people say that if i complete the course, that counts!)

So now i get to tint my own windows, do custom kick panels and sub boxes, work on my car the entire time, as well as some "suprise" projects they have ... all included in tuition!!!!!!!!!! SO PSYCHED!!!

The plan is that i'm moving to Richmond Hill for 2 months, i'll be living out of the Best Western (it's like their residence, tons of students will be there). I get free gym membership, there's 3 pools, arcade, pool tables, etc... it's going to be like a huge awesome vacation that will turn into my career at the end!!!

Now taking preorders to "do up" cars (just kidding!)

Sounds like the Mobile Dynamics Course. I had a buddy do it, and he liked it alright. I think it is mostly theory etc. I do know they do FG work too, but not sure how much.

The class is run in the building beside my work.

it's the 8 week course, plus for my electives i'm doing 20 Hz and Phase X (phase x i can do only b/c i'd be graduating the 8 week course as oppose to having *blank* years experience)

20Hz:
Quote:
Students learn through exciting hands computer based modeling, the relationship between speaker specifications and the effects that they have on each other. Learn not only how to interpret specifications, but how to measure them first hand for greater accuracy.
In this revealing one day program, Mobile Dynamics provides students with the skill sets required to: measure, predict and tweak their system components just like the true professionals. Ever wonder what your subs can really do? Find out and then apply the knowledge to your own personal subwoofer project.
Whether you are experienced installer, audio enthusiast or just simply want to design & build the most kick'n systems possible, 20 HZ is for you.
Phase X:
Quote:
X is exclusive for experienced industry pro's only. X covers techniques you have seen in some of the coolest vehicles, but never knew how to execute. It also focuses on unique materials and compounds that have rarely been used in mobile electronics installations.

X is 2 days, all hands on. Build your skills and your profile along with your opportunity to increase your income.
http://www.mobiledynamics.ca

You do learn theory, but it's mostly hands on.
