Hey, hey now! You've got a couple years on me. Did they even have TVs when you were growing up?

Actualy to be honest when I was growing up we were pretty poor. I was just recently going through some pictures and saw one of my dad and I watching a hockey game on what looked to be like a 16" TV which was on top of a milk crate. We were sitting on the floor...because we had no couch.

Talk about bringin back the memories! that wooden spoon scared the hell out of me, and so did the broom stick, yikes.

have you guys paid attention to the way 8-10 year olds dress now? its either there minature Emo's or there minature gangster thugs, you never see a young kid these days with "normal" clothes.

Fucking music videos.

when I was a kid I was crazy, I always hurt myself.. every fuckn time! I remember being on a GT snow racer and hittin a ramp flying 10 feet and busting my collar bone and I got YELLED at for it!!! or flying on my bike down a huge hill on the sidewalk with no brakes and running into my grade 8 teachers van, as she was pulling out onto a side road. (she screamed LOL) I got harrased all year after that. man it hurt to.

now you see all these kids smoking, dressing stupid, having sex, doin drugs... at the age of 10, I don't know about you guys, but for me.. I never thought about any of that shit until mid high school maybe.

Ohh..... that reminds me about the time I talked back to my mom!

I was on my ass so fast I didn't know what happened... (Dad had me pinned and let me know what I did wrong)

I made sure to think and choose more appropriate words to discuss why I was upset from then on.

I had my lickin's... deserved them too! Another punishment was on your knees in the corner. Booo! didn't like that one... then if we were more bad, we had to hold our arms out and not let them drop.

I can turn this around and argue how mean my parents were... hitting and torturing me. But its not like that.

Parents "generally" do not like or want to punish their kids. I mean.. who wants to make their kid cry? Nobody.

Good parents do punish their kids.

I'm still afraid of wooden spoons to this day, every time I see one I break down and start crying like a little school girl

Today's kids need to have the beat down put on them more these days. They should also fear the wooden spoon as we did. After a good spoonin you knew what you did maybe wasn't such a good idea.

I still don't even own a gaming system.

We had a stick.... its name was "sam" (somehow my older brother made that name)

It lasted many years.. (4 boys... lotsa punishing to deal out)

then when that broke on one of us (we were happy it was gone)... Dad brought home "Sam's Friend" .... Now sam's friend was kind intimidating. Heavy black steel belted rubber with yellow paint with the title ... you guessed it "Sam's Friend"

... that one was never used.

Wow, thats unfortunate that alot of you got beat. My dad believed in the whole not hitting his kids story. I never got beat or hit but I got some of my priviledges removed when I made decisions that weren't so thought out. I'll probably have the same policy. He understood it was my life, gave me councelling when I needed it and I'm prolly happier in my life cause of it. Hitting people doesn't solve anything, humans are too smart to be "beat in to shape". I definetly wouldn't have the same respect for my parents if thye did, but I guess I wouldn't know any diffrent.

To be honest, its probably one of those things where you wouldn't understand unless you went through it. My dad didn't kick my ass because he was pissed at me, he did it because he loved me and wanted me to grow up the best man I possibly could be. To be completely honest, I'm glad my dad kicked my ass, I'm a better person today because of it.

BTW when I say he beat me, I mean he'd give me a slap on the wrist or on the backside. He neve actually hurt me, it was more of a psychological thing.

^^ True. You think a spank on the butt hurts? Hell no, but it makes you think about what you did since your sad that your parent had to do that, and since you didn't like it, you try not to do it again.

^^^hahaha, so true.

It's not like our parents were beating the living shit out of us. There's a BIG difference between a couple smacks with a spoon on the rear or a slap on the back of the head, and beating your child. I was usually worse for wear after playing street hockey.

well, personally, there is a limit. there is a spanking, and there is abuse. personally, i had a hard childhood with my dad. he was 6'5, 270lbs. going into highschool i was 4'11, like 95lbs. i have been hit, yes i agree with it to an extent, and i have been abused.

if you know where to set the limit, a good spanking is good, but i do not agree with getting hit in the head/face.

when i was younger too, we did all those things, forts, bike riding, etc...ya we got hurt, but we learned.

i'm sick of the little kids who think "i can do what i want, because if you touch me, i will call the cops"..or the ones who think they run the world. hold up. learn your place son. now, saying that, smacking a kid is not always the right option, but it can be utilized very effectively in some situations.

wooden spoon..man my oma still to this day will threaten me with that. mind you its not wodden anymore, but plastic, and she never ever used it.

If I have kids, they sure as hell are going to be spanked if they screw up.. Its going to be EXTRA hard to keep their head on straight, dealing with spoiled un-punished kids at school all day...

I never got spanked from age 4-5 and older. I got to go on my knees for 15-20 minutes, if not more depending on my screw up, facing a wall, on my bare knees...it SUCKED! It's like time out, only it hurts your knees and you are staring at a blank wall. It makes you think, damn, maybe I shouldn't screw up so much and I wouldn't have to be on knees staring at a wall. I'm gonna do that trick on my kids, and like my parents did to me, I had to ask permission to get up, and until they said yes I had to stay. And you don't get to talk to anyone or do anything either.

Plus the kid can't say they will call children's aid cause you put them on there knees for time out :P .

ITs true things have changed fast. I never heard of mp3 bans or cell phones bans in school. Growing up I got put in my place fast by my dad, if I said something wrong or talked back he just about ripped of my ear. no belts, so spoons, just a good twist or the ear.
