new ticket technology for police

just heard on the radio that police are showcasing new technology at the mto today that allows officers to email your offence directly to the courts which will eliminate clerical errors and not allow people to fight tickets as easily.

it also allows them to do a complete liscense background check, plate # check and see if you have any outstanding fines or a suspended liscense so they can press even more charges on the spot.

New E-tickets to be issued for traffic violators

June 28, 2006 - 7:36 am
By: Carl Hanstke with report by Ashleigh Patterson

Toronto police are going high tech and that means drivers can say good bye to getting off on a technicality.

Traffic violators will still receive a yellow paper copy of their ticket but will also be receiving an electronic copy, via email, from Toronto police.

The electronic versions will help to eliminate officer error and reduce the instance of drivers avoiding penalties due to clerical errors.

The new computers enable members of the OPP, MTO and Toronto Police to enter data immediately into the system and will automatically send a copy of the infraction directly to the courts.

The system also allows for license plate search and immediate summary of the new charges.

This gives officers immediate access to your driving record which could lead to more fines or penalties for drivers should they be on the road with a suspended license or other such restrictions.

A demonstration of the new system will take place during the truck safety blitz today from 6a.m. to 1:30p.m. on the northwest corner of Kennedy and the 401 in Scarborough.

Whatever, cops are gay, I'll ask you when you get a ticket. There are too many fucking laws in this country. It wouldn't surprise me if they restricted us from going out after 10 pm.

what they are talking about it a good idea in a sense, but like someone said before it will suck to be the first few ppl pulled over after this comes into affect ( if it even does)

To my understanding getting a ticket would be no different than getting a ticket otherwise, except for the fact that you'll actually have to pay for what you've done instead of getting off on a technicality. I personally don't like the idea of people getting out of tickets when they do deserve them. If / when I get a ticket I will pay it and accept the consequences. Cops don't give out tickets for NO reason (although some of you may argue this). Getting a warning is completely different though.

I think the objective of this new technology is to really go after people who shouldn't be driving instead of letting them drive away. i.e. a person who has a suspended/expired license or someone with a warrant for arrest etc.

i would think you could avoid this by eliminating the ablity to instantly read the information on your liscense card by demagnetizing the magnetic strip so it is unreadable... just a thought.

I wonder how secure these emails will be...seems like your leaving a big window of oppertunity with someones personal information. Seems cool though, glad police are keeping up with technology lol.

It has NOTHING to do with sending YOU the ticket. It has everything to do with the cop sending the information right after the incident occured directly to the courts. This way, there is significantly less chances of errors occuring from the time of the incident to the time of the court date.

Most tickets get dropped because of the TONS and TONS of paperwork that goes along with filing a ticket. That's where the paralegals look for errors.

If the ticket info goes straight to the court, you got almost zero chance of finding mistakes unless the cop did it right on the spot. However, the article states that they get a review of all their info and they double check it to make sure it's correct.

^ humans make errors whether we have computer to help or not. I can see the limiting the amount of "clerical" errors but I still see them happening alot.

Of course they do, but it would help eliminate a lot of stupid mistakes that are done now.

For example:
My friend just got let off a ticket becuase the cop put the wrong month, one month ahead. He got the ticket in May, the cop put June. While this may not be a big deal to you, the fact is, the ticket never even existed and couldn't be put in the system.
Now imagine the new technology was up and running. Date would be filled in correctly because it would be done automatically, same as time, etc. It would ensure the ticket is signed by the cop too.
I have a friend who had a ticket tossed coz the cop forgot to put his signature.

When they swipe your license it will tell them if it's suspended or not. They can check the date for expiration. Warrants for arrest are posted on the drivers license aswell. The system is simply to send a given ticket directly to the court system, so it bypasses getting handed over, you avoid any clerical error. Either way, you do the crime, you do the time, they are just making easier for you to do the time.

the only thing I can see as good about this is you can pay your offence the next day, instead of waiting 1-4 weeks for the officer to submit the paperwork
