So my vehicle needs an insurance inspection..
So I get this letter in the mail, saying that my vehicle is subject to "pre-insurace inspection" rules, and that my vehicle must attent an inspection site to receive an inspection report, and if I fail to receive an inspection that my policy could be cancelled. So, should I remove my amp and subs and hide the wiring? Can they even do this.. my policy started on June 1st, and I received this letter today (July 28)...

The answer is yes. They usualy take pics of your car, under the hood etc. Usualy they do it before they give you a policy though

Insurance companies do not always ask for this before you start up a new policy with them. Sometimes they just do it to be on the safe side... Young kids with insurance and nice cars so they look into things. Also an amp and the wires shouldn't be a problem (but dont take my word on that) they mostely look for what you have changed physically with the car.. ie. body kits, tinting, lowering, rims, if you have done anything illegal to the engine and can remove it I would.... they want to make sure that if they are insuring the car if it ever gets hit and has to be fixed they will not cover the body kit or anything else that isnt stalk... I used to work for a insurance company and some people get pissed, but i believe you can insure your add ons

My engine is completely stock. The only mods are subs, amp and deck, and tails. Theyre slightly darkened, and matched red, instead of that ugly orange blinker area on the 1993-1999 jettas.

which insurance company are you with?
My civic is with Bel-Air (Nordic) and they told me I had to get an insurance inspection before they would let me get the whole shebang (they gave me 30 days or I would be cancelled), anyway I made a thread about this a while ago: http://forums.vitalmotion.net/showth...ight=insurance I went to Apple autoglass and the guy didn't check any of my mods at all, all he did was take a few pics from different angles, I even saw the inspection form and he crossed everything under mods, even audio lol He never checked under the hood, in my trunk, and didn't say anything about my car being lowered or anything. He then sent in the pics to the insurance company and it was all good. I have heard though, if you want to be on the safe side, all they care about is that you don't have an aftermarket intake, exhaust, that your rims don't exceed $1000 and that you don't have heavy audio equipment now given that, the insurance company most likely won't cancel you on the spot for having those mods, ur policy might go up in price all you need to know is, try to be honest with them, and you won't get screwed ------------------ '05 WDP Acura TL = Winter Beater '95 EJ1 Coupe = Tuned to 205WHP '01 Honda CBR600 f4-i = Fun On 2 Wheels '94 Integra Type R 4dr = My Baby's Baby |

I told My insurance company that my intake was for gas milage. then the woman started asking me where she could find one for her car. Insurance doesn't really care they just want to make sure they aren't insuring a $40,000 show car for the value of a $1000 beater and that you dont have things like nitrous oxide or major modifications "ferrari kits on fieros, custom bodywork" things like that are very grey area things to insure and they are making sure You aren't in that category.

I went through this when I got my car but didn't require an inspection. They told me they only do it on certain types of vehicles.
All they said with mods was a dollar amount of worth because I told them that I would be changing the stereo. They said that they cover up to a limit under the policy (can't remember, $1k $1100 or $1500 worth). After that they told me its only a few dollars per $1000 or something added to the comprehensive and theft portion of the insurance if I want the rest protected. If something happened and I had more than that dollar amount I could only claim up to that limit. I'd say no biggie if all electronics as long as you don't have a vid screen that can play movies while the car is in gear. FYI I am with Bel-Air Direct underwritten by Noridic. I think most of the time they're looking for hardcore performance mods and existing damage so that you can't make a bogus claim in the future. ------------------ 2000 Subaru Legacy GT |

^^^ Mine too
All it is, is they take pictures of your car, if you have an aftermarket stereo, leave it in. I had my 15 inch with amp and he took some pics of it and that was it. it takes like 30 seconds to do. Leave all ur stuff, like its been said, they are just making sure the car u say u are insuring is actually the right car. I also had additional insurance on my stereo, so I think thats why they took a bunch of pics of it. He didnt look under my hood at all. Took some pics of the inside, odometer, outside (back and front) inspected for any major damage and thats about it. I've gone to Go Glass on Manitou for all of mine... ------------------ 1997 Volkswagen Golf CL - SOLD 1994 Volkswagen Jetta GL Turbo Diesel - RIP I have 3.5 Litres at my disposal, I'd like to use them all! |

I deal With Economical aswell and when I went for my Inspection to Apple auto glass. He asked me 3 times if I had any mods. I Kept telling him "no" Until he asked about an aftermarket stereo. I told him I did have a stereo and subs and I explained all the Brands and model number to him. He wrote all them down and sent it to the insurance company. I was worried so I called Economical to ask her if the stereo would negativily impact my insurance and She said (lady on the phone) That it won't Raise my premium or anything The only difference is that now My stereo is Covered if it gets stolen. She told me it would be a $300 deductable to replace all my stereo equipment if it got stolen. Although he never took pics of any of the stereo. So my suggestion is to leave it all in. Tell him about it all and no the model numbers for everything. Then call economical to make sure that it won't impact your insurance policy. if it does negativly impact your insurance, Just lie to her and tell her you'll pull it all out and go for another inspection if that's what it takes. ------------------ Harrold - 98 Honda Civic hatchback. |

they really dont care about mods unless they are over 1500 bucks, mine was so it did cost a bit extra, other then that, they just want to see what stereo it is so u dont try and screw them over later. they do write down all the model numbers and stuff, i even told them about my upgraded speakers, just to make sure. ------------------ 1997 Volkswagen Golf CL - SOLD 1994 Volkswagen Jetta GL Turbo Diesel - RIP I have 3.5 Litres at my disposal, I'd like to use them all! |

i've had two of these done on different cars... i have sub/amp/deck in the intrepid and they took pics of it and thats it... they just want to make sure that the car you're wanted to be insured is actually the right car... it's simple, takes 10 mins, no cost to you... just go... like someone else said, sometimes they dont even ask about mods, depending on who you get to do it... they're just looking for crazy stuff...rims/kit/air ride.. something crazy.. a sub isn't going to jack your rates at least it didn't with mine ------------------ melissa | 2004 Suzuki GS500f - FOR SALE |

I used to work at Economical in accounts.
By the looks of it, as long as you don't have over $1500 in stereo modifications, your premium shouldn't go up. Even if you do, I would highly suggest showing them receipts etc so they can insure it. Because if your stuff gets stolen, your out of luck. Depending on the policy, there could have been a "no mods" restriction. You should have told everything up front to your broker or whoever you deal with directly. |

i've had to get these inspections done on all my cars ... it all depends on the insurance company, from talkin to people some insurance companies require these inspections as a condition of insuring you and others dont care...either way as most people are sayin its not a big deal.
