Angry McGuinty announces $10000 speeding ticket.

Even if you're driving by yourself if you are going 50 over it now counts as racing. With just the word of an officer your car and license can be confiscated for at least 7 days.

Quote:
Ontario, Canada Premier Dalton McGuinty today announced that being caught driving 50km/h (31 MPH) over the speed limit will automatically trigger "street racing" penalties -- even if the accused motorist is driving alone on an otherwise empty road. The change in definition will, in effect, turn ordinary speeding into an offense that can carry a $10,000 (US $9305) fine and up to six months in jail, making it one of the most expensive traffic tickets in North America.
Canada Introduces $10,000 Speeding Ticket

Source looks a little sketchy but I believe it. I officially hate Dalton McGuinty.

I've gotten 59 over before, it was just under $600 (circa 2003) and 1 month suspension,

$10,000 is ludicris, I guess the Minister of Finance could use the money,

douchbags should call it what it is, speeding with the included charge of careless/dangerous, its not racing...... its speeding.. BS>

FROM THE CTV ARTICLE:

Brian Patterson of the Ontario Safety League believes the new initiatives will help make the province's roads much safer.

"What we really have to do is deal with that extreme end of extreme driving: the impaired driver, the excessive speeder, the lane changer who causes traffic problems," Patterson told CTV News on Wednesday.

-the lane changer is me, becuase there is a serious problem with people not yeild the passing lane, and people content to drive 90km/h-100km/h in the centre lane being passed on both sides...

My overall opinion is that this is a pathetic solution to the greater problems at hand,
--those being over crowded 400 series (expand them with the record gas taxes they pull in)
--Lazy inatentive drivers who do not use the roadway/lanes as intended, the left most lane is a "passing lane" not a "fast lane" for those exceeding 105km/h i a 100km/h zoen

I personally think people that swerve in and out of traffic are more dangerous than speeders but I also think people should get out of the way of faster drivers when traffic permits.

There's going to be a lot of street racing minivans now. Probably close to 8 million vehicles in ontario now, against one air plane and a few officers. If you use common sense you'll be fine. They're getting worse than the states though.

They still have to catch me.

This can be looked at, as a good thing thou... and I have an example.

Not more then 30 mins ago while on the expressway (I was on my to meet up with someone) when outta no where (and I'm always checking my mirrors) some retard in a blue 4dr ford focus is behind me and serves into the other lane @ the last minute to pass me when theirs a vehicle not more then a few car lenghts infront of me. Well this guy was doing atleast 160kph+ (so 70kph over) as well as swerving in and out of traffic.

I had to slam on my brakes to ensure he had MORE then enough room to pull his little stunt rather then bouncing off me or another motorist. I would recommend to everyone to watch out for this guy... License Plate is something like BABRAY or BADRAY and the driver looked to be a middle aged man in a normal, none modified car.

Guys like this are the onse who need the $10,000 fine as an eye opener

Damnit... now I need to look into the other politicial parties... and pick which jackass I want in office more than the other liers.

I agree... don't call it racing, call it excessive speeding or something like that.

How can they catch the "lane changer" if they are using proper signalling their intent to change lanes?
(PS.. the "lane changer" is one of my biggest pet peves.. calm down wait your turn. At least change lanes appropriately with caution and one lane at a time)

Is the new legislation making it a criminal offence? I see it as a traffic violation... what is the legal interpretation now?

Around here, no reason to. Ever have to pass a pile of logging trucks in the northland so you're not stuck doing 20km/hr or less while they try and make it up the grades? Really need to drop the hammer some times.

Personally, if the weather and road permits, I feel there to be no problems. The part of the 403 I drive most cars do 40+ (except for under highway 52) and it seems to pose no problem. I am quite often doing 45 over the limit (I don't do more because it would be a major ticket if I got caught) but I could safely do much more than that because of the road being straight and empty. I feel it's not the speeders that cause the problems, it's the ones weaving in and out of traffic and the ones that are sitting in the fast lane feeling they should dictate the flow of traffic. Move over to the right unless passing.

so becuase a lot of people speed in excess that makes it ok?
try that in court and let me know how that goes for you.
the highway limit on all 400 series highways (other than the 406 that i know of) is posted at 100kph, not 90 by the way.

so anyone who can truthfully say that they have never gone 50kms over please state your name and await the "thats bull shit" comments. We have all done it. And now 95% of the population is concidered street racers. Whether they continue to "street race" or not. This whole street racing crack down is a scare tactic and it is working!
