Question Moving to a new province?

Does anyone know what all I need to do with my car if I want to move to another province?

In about a year and a half, I'll be done school, and I want to move to Alberta. I know I'll need a new driver's license, switch over my insurance, etc, but do I have to get Alberta plates too, or can I leave the Ontario plates on and just get Alberta plate stickers?

Also, what about buying out-of-province? I'm driving a sedan-type vehicle now, but I'm moving to Alberta specifically to get out of the city, so I want to buy a heavy-duty truck for the country/winter roads...the most obvious solution would be to sell my car in Ontario before I leave, and buy a truck when I get to Alberta, but if anyone knows what my options are (ie: could I buy a truck in Alberta next year, and bring it back to Ontario for 6 months?)

Guess I could call up MTO and ask

EDIT: Sorry, I should have said "Moving to another province"...Alberta isn't really new

if you are a resident of alberta you will have to have alberta plates.
that means safety and etest in alberta for the car that you take with you.
buying out of province means paying taxes on the car when you register it in the other province, safety/etest funness too

literally your best bet, sell your car here,
buy a new vehicle there and it takes alot of the "fun ness" out of it really!! And if your coming to ONtario for 6months the legality of it, you shouldn't have it more then 3 months IIRC, but you can easily get away with it!! when I moved here from BC I had bc plates on my car for almost a year(then the sticker ran up) and I never once got harrassed!! instead of transferring, I just brought it to the junkers and yeah..thats my fun story!!

If you're getting a truck, wait to get one out there.. appereantly the prices are really low since tons of guys get them while they're working out there then either upgrade because they're making stupid money, or they move back home and leave the truck there.

I was pretty sure I was moving to Fort Vermillion, but that fell through.. so i looked into most of what other people said, and it's all correct. The other cool thing if you're moving a little further north is that you get to use studded tires

It's now looking like Thompson, MB for me! I'm happy as long as I can use studded tires if I'm up north!

All excellent advice, thank you! I think I am going to go with my original plan, sell the Saturn in Ontario and buy a truck when I get to my destination city!

Rough: ahhh the e-test, I didn't even think about that, thank you! (Good thing I'm planning a year in advance, I'm finding out more and more things I need to do every day!)

Klown78: hmmm I should talk to you some more about your long-distance moving advice (Why would you even leave BC for Ontario?! )

inzomniac: that's really good advice, and yeah, I was pretty shocked at the prices when I was out there last week!! There are dealerships that are entirely Ford F150's out there lol

Good luck in MB Congrats on getting the hell outta here!

I've been told from most people out that way exactly what was explained in here. Not to mention that apparently insurance is like crazy cheap there (until you get a ticket), so it would be best to have everything registered there!
