Advice???

Do I buy a Talon with 280,000 km's on the original engine? Think it'll hold out for a while yet? It passed E-test and drives alright from what I could tell with the short test drive I took.

In the event that the engine failed.........how much to buy and have another one put in? This is the 2.0L DOHC non-turbo engine.

I wouldn;t take the chance. At that high milage either the tranny or motor is going to go pretty soon. As for a new motor you could probably do one (install yourself) for $600-$800. That is just a guess though but that would probably be what it would cost. My opinion, don't take teh chance.

well mileage is obviously pretty high...you have to ask yourself how long you want it for, how the test drive felt, and if you are willing to spend the money needed to get it repaired WHEN it fails..

so therefore i'm thinking if you don't need it for TOO long, then sure go ahead and buy it..

Well, I wouldn't have a problem spending $1500 on an engine swap if it came to that........and then it'd be good for several years.

I dunno......I love the car but the km's are high. It's only $850 though.

i'd be nervous of it, those cars are known to have crankwalk problems an mitsu has been known not to have the longest engine life out there. but on the other hand 850$ is getting you a pretty decent car for the cost if it's in decent shape besides the engine.
it's worth it if you find a turbo engine to swap into it

I'm not looking for speed.........I'm just looking for a "sporty" 2-door 5-speed. This car fits the ticket. I MIGHT look for an Avenger as well.

Avenger = slow ass sports car.......it's got everything but a decent engine

you could always drop in a used 3.0L V6 Mitsu engine...these are decently torquey, and abundantly available.

Dunno much about those motors.. however one thing I always think of is the rest of the car.. if it's gone 280,000 kms.. think about the bushings throughout the suspension, the springs etc. etc. I'm sure most of that shit can be changed, but do you wanna expend that money? Fuel lines and other misc. shit can also get pretty crusty/worn out after that much time on the road.. Never saw (or paid attention) to if it was hwy kms or not.. but I guess that would alleviate some of the above..

crankwalk is only a factor on the 2g turbos
the engines in the non turbo cars are not 4G63T
they are 420A exact same as the neon engine except flipped the other way
hope that clears it up
and also this is a chrysler engine
so in terms of engine life, think of buying a neon with that many kilometres on it

IMO integras are 10x better looking then a 1st gen talon, or even an avenger for that matter. How can you think a 1st gen talon looks good?

Integra's are TOO much $$$ PERIOD. If I wanted to spend that much money, I'd buy a Stealth.

Just a little correction, the 420A is only in non-turbo DSM's from 95 onward, before that they had a 4G63 non turbo.
