Tire Question

I was just wondering what tires people are using and what everyone likes/dislikes from personal experience. Im looking to get some new tires in the spring, but Im unsure still of what I want. Im not going to do a total performance tire again since I daily drive my car and wore them out too quickly. So, I need something that is durable, good in the rain, not outragously priced, and rides nice. Is that too much to ask!?!!? :tounge: I was looking at Kumho, but I had two people tell me that they were not good in the rain. So, Im back to asking around. Please post up what you think. BTW - they are going on a civ coupe.

Thanks!

What size tire are you running currently? This will be a big factor in deciding what might work best for you as not all models will come in the different sizes...

I have Michelin Pilot Sports LOVE EM but yeah i do not drive as much as you and a all out performance tire and they wear fast

when looking at tires look at there wear reading see if they are harder or softer the harder ones will last longer than the soft ones

Hercules makes a good tire you need like a H rated tire since you just want to drive on it no need for the softer Z rated compound that makes a difference in wear also

205/40/16 - however, I would like to put a 45 on to help protect my rim a bit. The low profile tires look good, but aren't practical enough for the amount of driving I do.

Greg: Thanks for the input. I was looking at a harder tire, but won't that make them worse in the rain for traction? Or is that strictly tread pattern?

u heard Kuhmo aren't good in the rain??

my boss had kuhmo ECsta 712's and he swears by them... i've got them now, just haven't put them on seeing as it's a little bit chilly willy out their -

i'm not sure who told u kuhmo's are't good in the rain (perhaps they were talking bout a different tire by kuhmo) but i've heard nothing but 'praise the lord' for the

Kuhmo Ecsta 712 = it's exactly the type of tire ur lookin for - great traction (both wet and dry) and long lasting for it's category - and u can't go wrong at around 120 bucks a tire!!

Kumho 711's last alot longer than 712's and are even cheaper.

as for rain just check the rain rating of the tires being good in the rain has more to do with the tread than the compound type

^^like i said, i'll tell ya'll what i think when the weather warms up for sum summer tires - but if the tire has an 'A' rating (or is it the 'AA' rating, meh) than that means it's the best for wet - one or the other -either way, u see a tire that's A/AA/250 or sumethin like that - ur set (read it in SPort compact car)

you could get falken azenis in 215 45 16
great tire for traction and descent in the rain, fairly long lasting and good if you want to go autocrossing or anything like that, i think they are around 140 a tire

drag radial suck ass in the rain ..... but they are a blast when it's dry ..... but not long lasting

Khumo 712 is a good choice ..... had them on the blades and Rachel drove to TO everyday with them for more then one summer

i'm thinking of getting some kumos to replace my firestone garbage in the spring.

currently i have a set of dunlop graspiks for the winter. excellent tire when it comes to traction. i have a hard time throwing the rear out when traction is on.

very limited road noise aswell.

The Fuzion is an awesome tire for performance and wet handling. I have them on our Golf and there are great. Priced right as well.

BTW does't hurt that I sell them to.(shamless plug..LOL)

Wow I can't believe you guys think 712 have good traction!

I know many people the got them to save money and regretted it. Make no mistake, there is one good thing about 712.... $... that's it. Oh and don't forget that they're terrible in the rain.

Get the Azenas. Fantastic in the dry (even competitive as a race tire), and as good as the 712's in the rain (as long as you keep the speed down in heavy rain).

But if you've got the cash get T1-s. I liked them so much they are the first set of street tires I've but more than one set of in my life. In they dry they're great and in the wet they're even greater.

In the rain I can get enough grip from my T1-s to lift a wheel.

that wuz kindof a stupid statement - u bash the 712's, but then say their better in heavy rain??? - then again u would probably know better since u autocross and such -

the 712's have always been about saving the $ and gettin a well balanced fun tire- i'm sure i won't be complaining!

I've had Toyos before and didn't really like them. I've heard that the TS1's are nice, but are they a practical tire for daily driving? Also, with the Azinas, I've heard they wear really quickly. If thats the case, then they probably wouldn't be a good tire for me.
What about these fusion tires - anyone had any luck with them???

The Azenis is a hardcore dry weather sport tire, and while it provides amazing dry and damp road traction, it will do nothing for hydro-planning resistance, so unless you are a racer that doesn't care about wear, comfort, or rain, then this tire will disappoint...

The 712 is a great tire for resisting hydro-planning, but as a serious hardcore sport tire, it will not have the cornering power of the more extreme tires, whether it is dry or wet out, but if you don't drive like an animal, then it may be way more tire than you need...

The T1-S is a very good tire but it is also just been discontinued and replaced by the T1-R, so you may want to wait for some feedback on the new tire.

No one brand is better than another for every single situation. You need to figure out what your priorities are and address those. Not the priorities of an autocrosser, or a grandmother, etc, that have nothing to do with your driving habits...

From what you have said so far, combining decent wear, hydro-planning resistance, and relative comfort, the 712 would work, the Fuzion ZRi, or even the Toyo Proxes4 would be a few good tires to look at...

Thanks for the feedback. Its hard for me to buy tires since I do drag race and would love a high performance tire for that, but also daily drive the car in the summer, so I want something that won't wear out and will be good in the rain. I guess I can't have my cake and eat it too!
As for price, Im not too worried about that. I don't want to spend 500 per tire, but I don't mind spending money on something that is going to last me.
I previously had the ProxesFZ4 and liked them, but they didn't last. The sidewall split, and well.....we won't go there. Plus, they were loud! I don't think I will be going that route again.

Actually, for drag racing, regular performance tires suck a$$ because the sidwalls are too stiff, so while this helps with cornering stability, it will actually slip easier under launch because the tire will not absorb torque whatsoever...

Also, the simple science is that the stickier the tire, the faster it will wear out. To gain something ya gotta give up something... You just have to pin-point what you are willing to give up to gain what you must have.

I have never understood this phrase... If I have some cake, your damn well right I wanna eat it! What would be the point otherwise???

I have never heard anything bad about the Yokohama ES100. I have Yokohamas and have never had a problem with them. Go to www.tirerack.com and search for some of the tires listed in this thread and it give you traction and wear ratings.
