My Suspension Restoration Project

Well, I decided it was time to ditch all the old worn out bushings, bearings, tie rods & ball joints. I also wanted to rebuild both half shafts and clean up the diff while I was at it. And in my spare time so far, this is what I've come up with and completed so far

Rear Subframe before I got started...

After the Subframe was stripped and most of the flakey stuff off was knocked off (looks a tiny bit better, hah)

Had to remove all these inner sleeves from the Subframe, Arms and Spindles after removing all the Bushings... what a PITA! Its not exactly hard to do, but its very time consuming.

Then I decided to Box in the Traction & Toe arms.

After Boxing the above Arms I drilled some holes to stress releave things so they can flex a bit if need be rather then snap if it ever came down to that...

After doing the rear arms I thought I'd also do the Front Control Arms.

All the Arms, TC Rods & Rear Spindles all blasted and ready for Powder Coating

Here are some pictures of everything after I Powder Coated it all up. Subframe was done in a RAL3020 Red.

I also did a bit of boxing/bracing on the Subframe

Front/Rear Arms, Spindles and TC Rods were done in a color called Extreme Chrome.

Crappy shot of the Subframe with the Sway Bar (the Red on Chrome should look real nice once its all back together)

Energy Suspension Bushing all pressed into the TC Rods, Front Control Arms, Rear Arms and Rear Spindles.

Solid Aluminum Bushings for the Subframe

Subframe Bushings all pressed in and ready to go

All the Bolts, Nuts and Washers from all the Arms/Rods/Spindles etc etc... Plan is to Media Blast them all and Coat them in a Flat Black as theirs no way Im putting everything back together with rusted hardware.

Most it all Media Blast and ready to be Painted

After being Painted

Next up is to Blast all this stuff and get it Coated up. Unfortunately I dont have spare rear Calipers thou so I will have to wait until I swap out everything in the rear and re-build the Calipers that are currently on the car.

Sad part is I still have quite a bit of work left to do...

- Press Hubs from Bearings (Buy new Bearings)
- Rebuild both Half Shalfs/Axles (Buy new Universial Joints)
- Buy and Install 4 Lower Ball Joints
- Powder Coat Diff Cover
- Prep & Paint Diff Housing

And that means I can start to re-assemble things in order to swap out everything with the parts that are currently on the car.

Yes and Yes...

A few people down in the states we're actually making fun of the subframe prior to me stripping it saying that it looked like the titanic and were very doubtful that I'd be able to make it look like new again but even after proving them all wrong, none of them had the nerve to comment.

I'd love to work where you work, just being able to strip down rusty old parts and rebuild them is so wicked and such an amazing experience.

props man

4 new camber bolts from Nissan alone are upwards of $150.00

So this way, sure I have my own personally time but I saved a decent chunk of money that I can just dump into a different area of the car

Only reason I blasting/coated the hardware was because I didnt want to reassemble everything with ugly rusty bolts, so this way it looks a bit nicer once its back together.

Hey thanks alot... I still got quite a bit more work left thou. And I also have a few more parts I either need to aquire or strip off my car so I can get them all Blasted & Coated up.

I finally got around to taking apart the rear axles and getting them all cleaned up thou. Was quite easy as well, just extremely messy.

Going to Powder Coat them up tomorrow and then I just need to get some new spider gear assembles so I can get them back together and move onto something else.

Yea I got some other stuff done and outta the way... Slowly coming up to the home stretch thou as all I have left to do now is get my car done to the shop so I can strip it down. Then before I install any of the parts I'm going to clean up the entire floor/frame and seal it up real nice and then install all the new parts so that hopefully there is no rust on the under body at all.

Front TC Brackets boxed in... Decided to make my own Nismo Power Brace vs buying one for like $250. I just have fit them on the car so I can brace them together making it 1 pc and then it'll time for Powder Coating.

Rear S14 Calipers. Went with them because they have a 38mm piston vs like 32mm so it increases the rear bias slightly. Other thing is I'll be using J30 Front Calipers and found out the J30 also uses a 38mm rear piston section so I should have the same braking bias/stopping power as the J30 and that I believe is 1000lbs heavier. So with upgraded pads/rotors/lines + my Z32 MC I should have all the brakes I'll ever need.

Next up was the rear bearings & hubs. No way I was re-using old bearings and rusty hubs
so I picked up some new bearings and decided I'd blast/coat the Hubs but they only got Tremclad as I was way to busy and wasnt switching to black just for the 2 hubs.

Then I decided I'd also Blast & Tremclad the bolts that hold the bearing assembly etc into the spindle since nothing is going back on dirty or ugly.

Forgot my camera @ home today thou so now pictures of the Hardware Finished but I also decided to tape off the bearings and coat the housings to prevent them from rusting for as long as possible but I'll get more pics up later in the week

Ciao
